An Expert Guide on How to Get Rid of Gnats Inside Your House

At night, be sure to remove the food bowls from the floor regardless. The 6-ounce can uses an eco-friendly pump action rather than aerosol, though the contents still are flammable. The nongreasy formula is unscented and will not damage clothing or equipment. Excess doses of bug spray with strong chemical additives can in rare cases lead to skin irritation or blisters. If you experience negative symptoms, discontinue use and speak with your health care provider. On whether organic sprays are effective, research suggests they are effective to a degree but may fall short to products including DEET and similar additives.

When properly applied, permethrin is extremely effective, providing protection for roughly six washings. For a bug repellent that’s safe and effective—and that won’t stink or leave a puddle of oil on your skin—skip the DEET and get a picaridin formula, like Sawyer Products 20% Picaridin Insect Repellent. It’s the best bottle of bug spray we found after testing over 25 repellents and talking to everyone from the EPA to the American Mosquito Control Association. If you’re concerned about the safety of bug spray, there are some steps you can take to protect yourself.

Some companies, including Sawyer and Proven, sell repellent lotions with a 20% picaridin concentration. But we don’t think repellent lotions are the best option for general use, although they may work in your specific circumstances. It is also available in a 6-ounce aerosol (twin pack), which offers a continuous spray. We found it harder to use than the pump spray, but it offers the same protection, if the pump spray is out of stock or if you simply prefer the aerosol format. The only real downside to the Sawyer picaridin repellent is that it has a slight off-smell to it when first applied.

What Is DEET in Bug Spray?

We found all of the scents to be pleasant, and the night sky reminded us of a light cologne. This reduces both the waste of a tossed-out bottle and the cost of additional repellent. Bloodsucking ticks are one of the most unpleasant bugs, with a bite that can carry Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Though both usually respond well to antibiotics, if left untreated, they are potentially fatal. Ben’s Tick Repellent Spray focuses specifically on this bug (which is related to spiders rather than insects), providing long-lasting protection of up to 12 hours. The active ingredient, picaridin, is also known to work against mosquitoes and flies, though no time period is given.

It proved highly effective when used outdoors, even while sitting in the grass near a body of water with plenty of mosquitos and gnats in the area. With 30% DEET as its active ingredient, this bug spray is the best at protecting against tick bites, particularly if you are in a grassy area where ticks are a bigger concern. The spray also protects against a variety of other insects like mosquitoes, chiggers, flies, gnats, and no-see-ums.

Effectiveness

The ingredients in many bug sprays—including DEET—are often considered safe for pregnant people when used in moderate amounts. The product contains 25% DEET, also repelling fleas and no see-ums. The small bottle is great for bringing along in a backpack or tote, but we wish it were also available in a larger size. The effectiveness and lightweight formula make it a great bug repellent for everyday use, so the 4-ounce bottle could become depleted quickly, especially when used by multiple family members. Picaridin is a highly effective insect repellent that can be applied directly onto the skin. This powerful solution belongs to the piperidine chemical family and works by disrupting the mosquito's ability to detect or identify its target.

During our research, we found a number of questions relating to the use of bug sprays that crop up quite often. For those wondering which is the DIY best bed bug spray, pure alcohol applied directly to bugs is a quick and easy answer. Batch's relief balm are enriched with lavender, tea tree oils, jojoba oil and essential oils and eucalyptus oils for quick absorption and to calm irritated areas.

The Best Bug Sprays, Backed By Our Testing

To determine the ease of application, we applied the bug spray to our arm and took note of the texture of the spray on the skin. We also paid attention to the repellent's drying time and its absorption into the skin, being mindful of any sticky or greasy residue. We then evaluated the scent of the mosquito repellent, including the strength of the chemical odor or sweetness (or lack of it), as well as the duration.

If you're still not convinced, consider other all-natural alternatives like coffee grounds, essential oils, banana peels, white vinegar and onions. Each has also been proven to stave off an infestation if left out on kitchen counters. Below you'll find a few of the most popular plants to deter bugs from your home and kitchen. The frequency of application depends on the product’s residual effectiveness, the severity of the infestation, and the targeted pests. Some insecticides provide long-lasting protection, while others may require more frequent treatments.

We think these provide solid repellency for long enough to recommend—just be mindful of the reduced coverage time. Off Defense Insect Repellent 1 With Picaridin is available in both an aerosol can and a pump-spray bottle (we generally prefer the latter). It’s very similar to our Sawyer pick, but it doesn’t have the range of buying options or the second cap. We have yet to use it, but with the 20% picaridin, it should have the same repellency as the others.

Ethanol generally provides a cooling sensation as it evaporates rapidly. However, some can leave a residue that not everyone finds pleasant. The convenient 4-ounce bottles are easy to carry in a pocket or purse and have a nonaerosol pump action. Defining categories also allowed us to hone in on specific needs, such as the best bug spray for kids or for sensitive skin.

"Most mints are very high in oily aromatics that are easily extracted from the leaves," says Pavlich. "Mint repels cabbage moths, ants, mice, and fleas." It's best to plant mint in containers, as it is a prolific grower that can take over the landscape. But did you know that those fumes might be doing more than just making you feel uncomfortable? According to a new study, exposure to pesticide fumes can actually be harmful to your health. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of California – Berkeley, looked at data from over 2000 people who were exposed to pesticides while working in agricultural fields.

A pest control company can help you tackle a serious or persistent infestation. From hanging ribbons and cards to sticky stands specifically designed for potted plants, sticky traps are an easy way to catch a cluster of gnats. You'll just have to keep an eye on it and replace the trap once it's full. Plug-in traps, like the Zevo Flying Insect Trap, can be extremely effective. Bug zappers typically attract flying insects with a UV light, then trap and collect the small bugs.

Martha‘s Table exists because every child, regardless of zip code, should have the opportunity to thrive. For over 40 years, the organization has been working to increase access to quality education, health and wellness resources, and family supports. The length of time a woman or family can live in shelter is based upon her individual needs and goals. We encourage battered women to use time at the beginning of their stay as respite, rest and sanctuary. This is the time that battered women use to look back and forward and to decide the best next course of action. Women who choose to remain in shelter beyond this period will enter the “short-term transitional” phase of the program.

17 Hacks That Will Help Keep Insects Out Of Your House

And although it has an odor, it’s not as strong a scent compared with that of other repellents that contain DEET. This CDC fact sheet (PDF) says to “use no more than 30% DEET on a child,” so Cutter’s formula provides long-lasting protection while still meeting that threshold. DEET (PDF), the most well known, is effective but tends to be oily and smelly. Available “dry” formulas remedy this some, but another issue with DEET is that it can damage some synthetic fabrics, as well as watches, fishing line, cameras, glasses, and anything else made of plastic. The American Academy of Pediatrics says DEET is safe for children over 2 months old—in concentrations of no more than 30%—and recommends washing off the repellent once children return indoors.

Bugs love kitchens and it's normal to find a line of ants on the counter or a stray cockroach scurrying across the floor in search of snacks. But just because kitchen bugs are common, doesn't mean they're any fun to deal with. Exterminators are expensive and bug sprays are often laced with harmful chemicals that are worse for you than a few creepy crawlers. But a few common houseplants are known to repel bugs and keep ants, flies, moths and mosquitos from taking over your kitchen.

Suspend SC (Great for Long Lasting Killing Power)

Your health and wellness is unique to you, and the products and services we review may not be right for your circumstances. We do not offer individual medical advice, diagnosis or treatment plans. Absolutely, general-use insecticides can serve as a preventive measure by creating a protective barrier against potential infestations. Regular treatments, especially during peak pest seasons, can help maintain a pest-free environment. You may not get it right on your first application of an insecticide. Maybe you selected the wrong insecticide, or maybe you didn’t cover the right areas.

Ready-Mixed Sprays

Army in 1946, DEET is a chemical that’s a common active ingredient in many insect repellents, and it’s known for being highly effective. Yet, despite hundreds of products containing DEET being registered with the EPA, consumers have health concerns about the active ingredient. However, when used correctly, DEET is generally not considered harmful.

Our pick: Sawyer Products 20% Picaridin Insect Repellent

We tested Avon Skin-So-Soft Bug Guard Plus with IR3535 and found that just a little of the lotion formula goes a long way. That’s a good thing because this insect repellent is one of the most expensive that we tested. The active ingredient, IR3535, is effective against a wide range of nuisance insects, including mosquitoes, deer ticks, black flies, sand flies, gnats, no-seeums, and biting midges. If you're looking for an effective insect repellent with DEET, Sawyer's Controlled Release formula is a solid choice. With 20 percent DEET as its active ingredient, it provides reliable protection against mosquitoes and ticks.

Clean your recycling bin thoroughly, and repeat this every six to eight weeks, especially if you store the bin in your house. Next, be sure to rinse out all bottles, cans, and jars before tossing them. Additionally, if your recycling center accepts lids and caps, recycle them attached to their original containers, rather than separately. You can also sprinkle some diatomaceous earth around and inside the bins for some extra help. Regardless of the critter, no one wants a surprise like that when they go to slip on their shoes, especially if they're not paying attention to what might have taken up residence in them.

The 2-ounce bottle is TSA-approved as a carry-on item, so it's ideal for travel. The one exception is when a stiff breeze is blowing, since it dissipates the repellant, though, of course, a stiff enough wind will also keep the bugs away. If your home is under siege from eight-legged creepy crawlies, the Terro Spider Killer gives you a dual approach to eliminating all kinds of spiders like the black widow, hobo spider, and the brown recluse. Terro can be sprayed directly onto spiders and can also deliver long-lasting residual repellency for up to 12 weeks, for all areas around your home, from the bedroom to the basement. This product is also effective against ants, cockroaches, scorpions, ticks, silverfish, Asian lady beetles, and bedbugs. Just plug in the Comfort Wand® into the top of the 1-gallon bottle.

Keep ants away with baby powder

The products tested included various active ingredients, including DEET, picaridin, and IR3535. When we tested this lotion picaridin insect repellent from Sawyer, we were impressed with the simplicity of applying this formula and how effectively it worked while spending time outdoors. However, those sensitive to smells will be pleased to know it faded very quickly, unlike some other high-concentration picaridin or DEET products. The unique thing about this DEET bug repellent is the controlled release of the active ingredient. The DEET is encapsulated in a special protein that slows evaporation for this lotion formula. As a result, the DEET sticks around longer and provides up to 11 hours of effective protection against mosquitoes and ticks.

Something you might not think about that's also important for keeping pests out is to rinse all containers you recycle before tossing them in the bin. Insects love the sweet residue inevitably left in these vessels, and are attracted to any location they may be stored. Some common bugs that love these opportunities are ants, cockroaches, flies, fruit flies, etc. If you notice a lot of bug activity around your recycling bins, it's probably due to the residue you have left in the containers. Applying separate bug spray and sunscreen can be tiresome and lead to odd mixtures of scents or chemicals that might be undesirable, or even affect how well each works.

Because of its outstanding performance at killing bed bugs, EcoRaider® has become a preferred choice by many pest management professionals to reduce the use of synthetic chemicals. The spray is non-toxic but lethal to bed bugs as its plant-based active ingredients penetrate the bug’s exoskeleton and attack its nervous system, which causes immediate paralysis and death. If Sawyer’s repellent is not available, we’ll happily reach for Ranger Ready Picaridin 20% Tick + Insect Repellent. Ranger Ready’s repellent has the same 20% picaridin concentration as our top pick, so it should have the same effectiveness against ticks and mosquitoes. It comes in either a pump- or trigger-spray bottle, the latter of which emits a nice, even clout of repellent. This repellent is available in a variety of scents (orange and night sky).

According to Insider, this substance is made from ancient fossilized algae called diatoms that are in powder form. It's used for a myriad of things in agriculture and often for pest control. It is unique in the way it works, and is most effective on pests with exoskeletons, which, granted, is a lot of them!

The best mosquito repellant from our tests isn’t a conventional spray or candle. Instead it's a rechargeable device called the Thermacell E55 that creates a 20-foot zone of protection, say, around your campsite or outdoor dining area. It might sound too good to be true, especially since you can’t see or smell the heat-generated repellant as it works its magic, but in test after test it did a superb job of scaring off mosquitoes. The EcoRaider 2oz bottle will effectively treat one bed, so you may need more than one bottle. To make sure that bed bugs do not hitch a ride home in your luggage, spray inside and outside of your suitcase for extra protection. A highly effective bug killer that is made by pest professionals, the MDX Magma Home Pest Control Spray will protect your home from a large range of insects.

House of Cards TV Series 2013-2018 Cast & Crew

the house of cards cast

For parts of the show's first four seasons, Mahershala Ali portrayed Remy Denton, Frank Underwood's former Press Secretary who later bounced around between being a lobbyist and Underwood's temporary Chief of Staff in the absence of Doug Stamper. Since leaving House of Cards, Ali has won two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor, for his performances in Moonlight and Green Book, the latter of which also earned him a Golden Globe. Ali will take a step into the big screen Marvel Cinematic Universe in the near future, in the announced reboot of Blade, in which he will play the titular vampire hunter. House of Cards Season 6 will be the show’s last season… without the disgraced former lead.

Main characters

Kate Mara's Zoe Barnes was a major player in the first season of House of Cards when the Washington Herald reporter became the lover/mouthpiece of Frank Underwood. Well, that is until her shocking death at the hands of her former lover in the Season 2 premiere. Since leaving the series, Mara has gone on to star in the panned Fantastic Four, the FX series Pose, and a number of other smaller projects. Mara is set to return to FX for the upcoming drama miniseries A Teacher, in which she will portray a young teacher who gets caught up in an affair with one of her students.

As this was a few years before Kevin Spacey announced his sexuality in the wake of the allegations against him, the scene is even more eye-opening with what we know about the actor today. Kate Mara spent the least amount of time on House of Cards but like Rachel Brosnahan, her role was hugely impactful on the story. She was murdered by Frank Underwood in the second season, but would later reappear, alongside Pete Russo, to haunt Frank during a hallucination, heavily signifying that the President feels guilt for his roles in their deaths. Seven years ago on February 1st, 2013, Netflix changed the future of streaming forever when it released its first original series, House of Cards. The streaming service has come a long way since 2013, with over a 1000 more Originals have been developed since.

The season ends with Frank and Claire watching the live execution of the hostage together, and Claire breaking the fourth wall for the first time by looking into the camera along with Frank. The fourth season of the American television drama series House of Cards was announced by Netflix via Twitter on April 2, 2015. Mara has gone in to star in plenty of roles, her biggest being Sue Storm in Fox’s failed reboot of the Fantastic Four franchise. Scheduled for release sometime in 2020, Mara will be playing the role of Claire in the series A Teacher.

Since the show's shocking finale in 2018, the Golden Globe winner has continued to stay busy with her work in the DC Extended Universe, including the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984 and the 2021 release of Zack Snyder's Justice League. Wright is also slated to make her directorial debut with Land, a drama in which she also stars, about a grieving attorney who goes off the grid to escape society. It seems like forever ago when Frank and Claire Underwood and the rest of the impressive House of Cards cast were making news for being a part of one of the most controversial and well-made original shows on Netflix. Over the course of the David Fincher-produced show's six-season run, the political drama was home to some of the biggest and brightest stars of the time as well as those who became famous for their portrayals of the Washington, D.C. “We were really excited we could get to an agreement… for the conclusion of the show,” chief content officer Ted Sarandos  told UBS’s Global Media and Communications Conference in New York.

However, Underwood learns that the President wants him to promote his agenda in Congress and will not honor their agreement. Frank's wife Claire runs an NGO, the Clean Water Initiative, which she uses to cultivate her own power; she seeks to expand its scope to the international stage, often using Frank's connections. Claire shares her husband's cold-hearted, ruthless pragmatism and lust for power, and they frequently scheme together to ensure the success of each other's ventures. They both work with Remy Danton, a corporate lobbyist and former Underwood staffer, to secure funds for their operations and expand their influence. Partygoers immediately lined up for a photo op that allowed them to emulate Claire’s pose in the season six key art while a DJ spun ’90s hits — the regal venue and besuited guests an incongruous sight as “I Wanna Sex You Up” blasted through the speakers. Cast members including Wright, Kelly and Zimmer held court by the bar, ignoring their reserved banquettes until the party was well underway.

Yet when one door closes, a window opens, and Robin Wright’s Claire Underwood is seizing that entrance. Ambassador to the United Nations and faces a crisis in the Jordan Valley, which pits Frank against Russian President Viktor Petrov. When Petrov has an American gay rights activist arrested in Russia, the Underwoods persuade him to secure a release.

Wishing to avoid public disclosure of his personal issues, Walker has the White House Counsel coach the counselor, which the special prosecutor interprets as witness tampering. As the House Judiciary Committee begins drafting articles of impeachment, both Walker and Frank offer Tusk a presidential pardon in exchange for implicating the other. Tusk sides with Walker at first, leaving Frank no other option than to regain the president's trust as a friend. With Walker forced to resign, Frank is sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. After Frank begins his vice presidential duties, Claire becomes close with the First Lady and learns Walker's marriage is strained. He meets Xander Feng, a Chinese businessman and ally of Tusk's, to engage in back-channel negotiations that Frank intentionally scuttles at the expense of Tusk's credibility.

In this previous trailer, we first learned the final fate of the show’s former star and main character in Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood. Our emphasis on final is quite purposeful, since the trailer reveals the show’s post-Spacey strategy of killing off Frank. (It’s not a spoiler if the show is promoting that narrative.) We see Claire standing over Frank’s grave throwing figurative and literal shade, almost like a demented Machiavellian reversal of the scene in Forrest Gump at Jenny’s grave. But if you look now, the focus is not on the same kind of films that were made in the 90s. When I look now, the most interesting plots, the most interesting characters, they are on TV.

House of Cards is an American political thriller television series created by Beau Willimon. It is based on the 1989 novel of the same name by Michael Dobbs and an adaptation of the 1990 British series of the same name by Andrew Davies, also from the novel. The first 13-episode season was released on February 1, 2013, on the streaming service Netflix. House of Cards is the first TV series to have been produced by a studio for Netflix.

In 2017, following allegations of sexual misconduct against Spacey, Netflix terminated their relationship with the actor. The sixth and final season was produced and released in 2018 without his involvement. Since her departure from the series, Atkinson has continued to pop up in various television programs like The Walking Dead, Castle Rock, and Bluff City Law, which was cancelled by NBC after the original 10 episodes that were ordered were filmed.

The drama will explore the complexities and consequences of a female teacher caught having affair with a male student. One of the most intriguing aspects of Darrow’s character was his relationship with the Underwoods. In the second season, Meechum has a threesome with Underwoods but is shown to have kissed Frank along with Claire.

Case-control study Epidemiology, Risk Factors & Outcomes

case control design

Recall bias in a case-control study is the increased likelihood that those with the outcome will recall and report exposures compared to those without the outcome. In other words, even if both groups had exactly the same exposures, the participants in the cases group may report the exposure more often than the controls do. Recall bias may lead to concluding that there are associations between exposure and disease that do not, in fact, exist. A case-control study is a good tool for exploring risk factors for rare diseases or when other study types are not feasible. Many times an investigator will hypothesize a list of possible risk factors for a disease process and will then use a case-control study to see if there are any possible associations between the risk factors and the disease process. The investigator can then use the data from the case-control study to focus on a few of the most likely causative factors and develop additional hypotheses or questions.

What’s the difference between a case-control study and a longitudinal study?

case control design

Indeed, RCTs typically follow patients for only a small fraction of the time that the drug would be used in clinical practice, especially when the medications are for chronic diseases. An additional use of case-control studies for therapeutic effectiveness is to investigate variables or exposures that can guide clinicians in choosing the preferred neurosurgical treatment when more than one therapeutic option exists. An example in the neurosurgical literature includes the study reported by Lennarson et al27 described above utilizing a nested case-control study that evaluated age as a risk factor for nonfusion with halo-vest immobilization for treatment of type II odontoid fractures (Figure 3). The premise for this study was based on existing class III evidence showing no clear difference between the surgical interventions versus halo-vest immobilization for treatment of these fractures. The results of this study provided strong class II medical evidence that age is a significant risk factor for nonfusion with halo-vest immobilization.27 Based on this finding, age can be used to define a treatment algorithm for choosing surgical intervention versus halo-vest immobilization. Similar case-control study designs could be used for other conditions with apparently equivocal treatment options and the findings could help guide the determination of appropriate neurosurgical treatment in subpopulations of patients.

This is important, for the statistical analyses appropriate for supporting the conclusion from such studies, the amount of bias control possible, and the ability to estimates odds and relative risk are different depending on study design. The neurosurgeon hoping to appropriately incorporate the results of the studies she reads into practice needs to have at least a fundamental understanding of these issues related to study design to avoid placing unjustified confidence in the conclusions of a study done with insufficient rigor. A frequent source of controls is patients from the same hospital who do not have the outcome. However, hospitalised patients often do not represent the general population; they are likely to suffer health problems and they have access to the health care system. An alternative may be to enroll community controls, people from the same neighborhoods as the cases. Care must be taken with sampling to ensure that the controls represent a ‘normal’ risk profile.

What Is a Case-Control Study? Definition & Examples

If we sample the study participants based on exposure and move towards the outcome, it is a cohort study. However, if we sample the participants based on the outcome (some with outcome and some do not) and study the exposures in both these groups, it is a case-control study. For cohort studies, the drug–outcome association is usually expressed as a relative risk, a relative rate, or a hazard ratio. Advanced statistical techniques are used to account for factors other than the drug exposure of interest that might distort the drug–outcome association. These factors or potential confounders are often handled simultaneously with multivariable regression models. Because these statistical models account for measured variables, it is crucial that the data source capture as many potential confounding variables (or proxies of confounders) as possible.

case control design

A case-control study is an experimental design that compares a group of participants possessing a condition of interest to a very similar group lacking that condition. Here, the participants possessing the attribute of study, such as a disease, are called the ‘case’, and those without it are the ‘control’. Beyond color correction, the panel offers a range of transport and grading controls conveniently positioned around the edges.

Types of Controls

In case-control studies, participants are recruited on the basis of disease status. Thus, some of participants have the outcome of interest (referred to as cases), whereas others do not have the outcome of interest (referred to as controls). Case-control studies are less expensive and quicker to conduct (compared with prospective cohort studies at least).

Risk Factors and Sampling

In cross-sectional studies, researchers are simply examining a group of participants and depicting what already exists in the population. Researchers will first identify the two groups, and then look back in time to investigate which subjects in each group were exposed to the condition. Case control studies are also known as "retrospective studies" and "case-referent studies." An important technique for adding power to a study is to enroll more than one control for every case.

Methodology Series Module 2: Case-control Studies

Then through further exploration, often using other study types (such as cohort studies or randomized clinical studies) the researcher may be able to develop further support for the evidence of the possible association between the exposure and the outcome. The most commonly cited disadvantage in case-control studies is the potential for recall bias.[2]  Recall bias in a case-control study is the increased likelihood that those with the outcome will recall and report exposures compared to those without the outcome. The first is to test a preliminary hypothesis to determine if a lengthy and costly RCT is justified. Additionally, this study design may be the only practical option for studying the treatment of a rare disease where enrollment would be insufficient for an RCT, or where randomization would be unethical.

About this article

Moreover, while the estimand may be identifiable, there need not exist an estimator with the desired properties (see e.g. [5]). Here, our focus is on identification, so that the purely statistical issues of the next step in causal inference, estimation, can be momentarily put aside. Thus, the outcome is measured after exposure in retrospective cohort studies, whereas the outcome is measured before the exposure in case-control studies. Case-control studies may prove an association between exposures and outcomes, but they can not demonstrate causation.

In addition, those with the outcome are more likely to recall and report exposures more clearly than those without the outcome. A case-control study looks at people who already have a certain condition (cases) and people who don’t (controls). By comparing these two groups, researchers try to figure out what might have caused the condition.

These additional complexities and designs are beyond the scope of this paper and represent an interesting direction for future research. We establish how, and under which conditions, various causal estimands relating to intention-to-treat or per-protocol effects can be identified based on the data that are collected under popular sampling schemes (case-base, survivor, and risk-set sampling, with or without matching). We present a concise summary of our identification results that link the estimands to the (distribution of the) available data and articulate under which conditions these links hold. Similarly, the researcher must recognize the potential for failing to identify confounding variables or exposures, introducing the possibility of confounding bias, which occurs when a variable that is not being accounted for that has a relationship with both the exposure and outcome. This can cause us to accidentally be studying something we are not accounting for but that may be systematically different between the groups. There are two reasons why, in case-control studies, large samples are desirable, and whymany controls may be matched to a single case.

However, cohort studies with long observation periods may be more susceptible to losses to follow-up and to inaccurate measurement of exposures and outcomes. Large numbers of patients may be required to precisely estimate meaningful drug–outcome associations, especially for rare outcomes or outcomes that take a long time to occur. Observational studies are methodologically difficult, susceptible to bias and confounding, and difficult to interpret, given the many types of bias potentially at play. For these reasons, observational studies are limited to studying drug–outcome associations and cannot be used to measure the causal effects of drugs. Many of these techniques can account for multiple potential confounders simultaneously.

Out of the 223 nominations, House of Cards won 27 of the awards, including 7 Primetime Emmys and 2 Golden Globes. House of Cards will forever be recognized as the first original online-only web series to receive Emmy nominations. The sixth season marks the first of the series without Kevin Spacey, who portrayed lead character Frank Underwood. Soon after production began in October 2017, Netflix fired the actor as a result of sexual misconduct allegations made against him. Production was halted for several months while the screenplay was reworked to exclude Spacey's character.

House of Cards season 4

As a protective measure, Frank's aide Doug Stamper brings Rachel to a safe house while Frank lures Zoe to a Metro station and, unseen by witnesses or security cameras, pushes her in front of an oncoming train. Zoe's death compels Janine to abandon the investigation, but Lucas continues the search alone. However, the hacker, Gavin Orsay, actually works for Doug and frames Lucas for cyberterrorism. Rachel, fearing potential harm and Doug's growing obsession with her, ambushes Doug and leaves him for dead, fleeing into hiding.

Final season and firing of Spacey

One hundred days after Claire takes office, she faces increased scrutiny, particularly in light of her husband's death following his resignation. The Shepherds are connected with Mark Usher, whom Claire has made Vice President, and who is having an affair with Annette. Annette's son Duncan puts pressure on Claire through his media company, Gardner Analytics. Claire and the Shepherds battle over deregulation measures, and Claire uses a chemical leak from one of the Shepherds' operations to embarrass the two. Doug, meanwhile, is in therapy following his confession to Zoe's murder, and Claire uses Assistant Director Green and his psychiatrist to monitor him.

House of Cards is an American political drama web television series created by Beau Willimon for Netflix. It is an adaptation of the BBC's miniseries of the same name and is based on the 1989 novel by Michael Dobbs. Below is a list consisting of the many characters who have appeared throughout the series' seasons. The only two actors to have main appearances in all six seasons of House of Cards are Robin Wright and Michael Kelly. Robin Wright, Michael Kelly and 'House of Cards' castmembers tell The Hollywood Reporter why it was important the Netflix drama returned for a sixth and final season after Kevin Spacey was fired from the series over sexual assault allegations. Lane, Kinnear, and Fern will be joining a House of Cards Season 6 cast with some serious star power.

Because the new Vice President is the former Governor of Pennsylvania, a special election is to be held for his successor. Underwood helps Russo get clean and props up his candidacy, but later uses sex worker Rachel Posner to break his sobriety and trigger his downfall shortly before the election. When Russo decides to come clean about his role in Underwood's schemes, Frank kills Russo and stages his death as a suicide. With the special election in chaos, Underwood convinces the Vice President to step down and run for his old position of governor – leaving the Vice Presidency open to Underwood, as was his plan all along.

Season 5 finds him hot on the campaign trail for the 2016 presidential election, while stoking the fears of the American public by hamming up the threat of terrorism. As if the real-life presidential election cycle in the US wasn't traumatising enough, House of Cards season 5 will thrust us right into the thick of Netflix's own fictionalised account, as the Underwoods campaign for Frank's presidency. Spacey has since been cleared of any charges related to sexual misconduct but his reputation and career have been completely tarnished. The veteran actor filmed his role for Michael Hoffman’s film Gore, but despite being completed since December 2018, the film has yet to see the light of day. Despite Frank Underwood’s death, Kevin Spacey has taken it upon himself to reprise the role in two short films.

However, Petrov demands that the activist apologize on Russian television, leading the activist to kill himself while being visited by Claire. Later, after Russian troops are killed in the Jordan Valley, Petrov convinces Frank to remove Claire as Ambassador in exchange for a peaceful resolution. Claire resigns, giving the reason that she wants to be more active in Frank's campaign. Frank Underwood, a power-hungry Democratic congressman from South Carolina and House majority whip, celebrates the 2012 election of President Garrett Walker, who had agreed to appoint him Secretary of State in exchange for his support.

Incense Cedars and firs become the dominant arbors, and 0.8 miles past the junction, the trail crosses a sign marking the boundary of the Cucamonga Wilderness. This is the halfway point by mileage, but in some ways, the hike is just beginning. Designer Lara Hovanessian packed plenty of bold design elements into the powder room and adjacent lounge. A moody House of Hackney floral wall covering lines the dressing area, which leads to a powder room accented with a Kelly Wearstler’s Graffito II from Walnut Wallpaper.

An eye-catching natural stone by Walker Zanger was selected for the counters and backsplash, and the space was outfitted with the latest Monogram appliances. Designer Ashleigh Miranda focused on juxtaposing technology and earthy elements in her moody media room. Bursts of hot pink and apple green energize Steven Cordrey’s design for the home’s veranda. Hand-beaded light fixtures illuminate the seating areas, which feature tables and chairs from Janus et Cie’s Amalfi Coast outdoor collection. A brick-walled patio became a party-ready outdoor kitchen and dining area thanks to Douglas R. Sanicola of Outdoor Elegance. Sanicola and Monique Wood installed Caesarstone countertops fabricated by Carlito’s Way Stone to create a functional space for outdoor entertaining. Designer Rachel Scheff used the home’s spectacular ceiling, woodwork, and stained glass as the inspirations for her fanciful, flora- and fauna-filled foyer. “It was one of my favorite rooms in the house because it was the one that had the most history preserved, and I wanted to really celebrate that,” she told AD PRO.

“I wanted you to feel like you were transported to another time and place,” Scheff says. Departing from the parking lot along Icehouse Canyon Road, the trail takes course along the northern bank of a creek that flows down the canyon. Crystal clear water tumbles past oaks and sycamores, and this is a fine venue for a directionless romp through nature for those disinterested in following the trail. A half-dozen cabins are spread out along the bottom of the canyon, along with another half-dozen stone foundations (ruins left over from the early days of the Angeles).

Working with Jacqueline Black and Michelle Porreca, Williams brought in a Chinoiserie wall covering to give the space a garden-like atmosphere. A palette of whites, deep blues, and gold creates an elegant atmosphere in the formal living room, which was designed by Rachel Duarte. The designer established two seating areas within the space, including a cozy gathering spot with chaise longues that flank the original carved marble fireplace.

Designer Mark Hermogeno paid tribute to Silver Queen Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes in the kitchen, butler’s pantry, family room, powder room, and mudroom. “We had thought, What if she actually came back to life and asked us to remodel the space? “We wanted to concentrate on polished nickels and polished chromes to get that silver feel back in,” he says of the fixtures, hardware, and lighting by Kohler and Kallista.

Poncho sledding, as it could be called, adds even more enjoyment to this winter hike. Not long after crossing into the Cucamonga Wilderness, the trail begins to climb more seriously. Your heart starts to pound and your thighs start to burn… and then you hit the real steep section, an arduous march up a slippery slope called “the waterfall.” Have a look around for inspiration.

Designers Frank Slesinski and Serena Brosio collaborated on the charming living room in the Gatehouse. “One of the main things we did was add a window seat, which looks like it should always have been here,” Slesinski says. “Our whole goal with this space was basically to turn the lights on in the room, bring in the garden that’s outside, and kind of have an experience of a breath of fresh air,” Brosio says. Cozy Stylish Chic Creative Director Jeanne K. Chung and designers Angela Lee and Caroline Meloche brightened the dark wood-paneled library to create a space where residents can unplug. Wallpaper was added to the ceiling and the backs of the bookcases, and heavy wood blinds were replaced with soft draperies and Roman shades to make the space feel lighter. The firm used a mix of fabrics and wall coverings by Ralph Lauren Home from Designers Guild throughout the space.

In addition to the trail camps, backpackers may set up camp anywhere they wish in the wilderness as long as the spot is 200 feet from creeks and lakes. Above the snow-covered waterfall, the trail becomes more generous again and there is only one more steep passage over the last third-mile. These tracks are barely visible under the deep snow, and only one trail sign is visible. Designer Stephanie Hatten updated the Gatehouse Kitchen, turning it into an airy English-country-inspired space.

If Icehouse Saddle is your final destination, it is worth the extra effort to hike up the ridge to the north a few hundred feet to get above the trees for a magnificent view of the range to the east and west. The combination of blue skies, white snow, and impressive peaks make for an exception outing. The event draws more than 25,000 guests each year and offers several dining spaces, including Roe Japanese Fusion, the Tudor Rose Bistro, and Wattle & Daub Tavern. The Shops at the Showcase offer an array of merchants, from handmade jewelry to artisanal chocolates, and are also home to the Shops’s Wine & Cheese Bar. One mile from the start, comes a junction with the Chapman Trail, which turns north, passing through Cedar Grove Trail Camp on a more roundabout course to Icehouse Saddle. The Icehouse Canyon Trail continues straight ahead, eventually crossing over to the south side of the creek.

Hand-painted floors were the jumping-off point for designer Amy Peltier’s soothing primary bedroom design. “It was so much work, but it turned out beautiful.” The firm wanted the space to feel “light and airy and breezy,” and incorporated fabrics and wall coverings by Thibaut in a soft color palette. Peltier and designer Marina Kelly installed an arch to divide the bedroom from the sitting area, breaking up the large space. The designers worked with a color palette of Dunn-Edwards paints, and several chose to highlight the brand’s 2024 Color of the Year, a steely blue called Skipping Stones. Nods to Pasadena’s famous peacocks can be found throughout the designs, and many creators fearlessly brought in statement floors, enveloped their spaces with jewel tones, and added texture to ceilings. Others focused on bringing the beauty of the estate’s gardens and views inside with verdant murals, floral fabrics, and nature-inspired lighting.

The landmark mansion was built in 1902 by architect Joseph J. Blick for Gertrude Potter Daniels, who paid $15,000 for the shingle-style home. In 1905, Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes—known as the Silver Queen thanks to the source of her late husband’s fortune—purchased the home and soon made it her own. In 1922, she spent $37,000 to have the Postle Company of Los Angeles, who also built the Pasadena Playhouse, remodel it into an English Tudor Revival–style mansion, giving it the regal exterior that remains today. At the far end of the room, Levine installed a lush purple sofa with cocktail tables, creating the perfect spot for drinks, dessert, or relaxing with a cup of coffee. Maria Videla-Juniel turned the primary bath into a sumptuous retreat with hues of soft blue and brown. Thibaut wall coverings and fabrics were used for the walls and windows, and the elegant shagreen-covered vanities are accented with gleaming fixtures by P.E. Videla-Juniel and project manager Cheryl Hardy also installed a striking shower clad in herringbone stone tile.

The trail passes these current and past dwellings, ascending gradually into a wilderness with less and less human impact. Maria Videla-Juniel, who designed the primary bathroom of the main house, also devised a welcoming entry to the Gate House. A Thibault wall covering graces the entry, and a Fibreworks runner leads guests up the stairs. “I’m all about gardens connecting the architecture into the landscape,” landscape architect Timothy John Palcic tells AD PRO. He used a limited palette of chartreuse and dark hues that nod to the brick exterior and arranged benches to create intimate seating areas within the larger English-garden-inspired space. For a bedroom off the nursery, Carmine Sabatella wanted to create a jewel-toned escape.

We also supply ice for construction sites and utility workers as required by California law. Native California wildflowers accent the Arroyo Vista Garden, which was designed with fire safety in mind. Landscape architect Elisa Read Pappaterra filled the center fountain with cascading succulents. Jerome Thiebault created a polished and petite bathroom complete with storage and a shower. Troweled cement plaster was applied to the walls, and handcrafted Zia tile adds pattern to the floor. About This Hike

Icehouse Canyon is located in a beautiful stretch of the Angeles National Forest near Mount Baldy Village, just southeast of the mighty Mount Baldy. At 7,500 feet, this low point in the ridgeline offers sweeping views of the western San Gabriel Mountains. From the saddle, hikers and backpackers may continue on in several directions to explore nearby peaks and venture deeper into the Cucamonga Wilderness. The single-track to Icehouse Saddle climbs 2,600 feet over 3.6 miles and is an exceptional hike.

Hermogeno and designer Lynette Chin brought in a mix of vintage and new furnishings in the family room, incorporating performance fabrics for durability. “[We made] sure that it was a really usable room, that it didn’t just look nice,” Hermogeno says. An office space in the Gatehouse is now a soothing spa-inspired lounge designed by Margaret Lalikian. The designer referenced the house’s original name, El Robles—Spanish for oak tree—with a tree-filled landscape mural by Arpy Dabbaghian. “For the wall mural, I had to pick something to bring them into nature and a calming environment,” Lalikian says. Samatha Williams’s Tearoom in the Gatehouse is brimming with vintage charm and elegant accents.

The room’s coffered ceilings were enhanced with a faux-wood decorative painting by Jhon Ardilla. “I really feel like the dining room is a forgotten room,” says the designer, who set out to prove how vital the space is to a home. The room is anchored by a Riva 1920 table made with the wood of a 50,000-year-old Kauri tree, which Levine surrounded with seating for 12.

Packaged ice is also available for emergencies, such as natural disasters, heat waves or power outages.

A black-and-white triangular mosaic tile floor by Artistic Tile from Mission Tile West puts a contemporary twist on the classic checkered pattern. Normally, the trail crosses to the north side of the canyon and climbs a series of switchbacks to get to Icehouse Saddle. However, when that white thing that is usually foreign to Southern California covers the ground, the consensus becomes to take a direct track right up the center of the canyon. As the Pasadena Showcase House of Design enters its 59th year, it’s returning to a familiar setting.

Athans Ice House sells cubed and crushed packaged ice, in bags ranging from seven to 40 pounds each. Whether you are planning a private party, or need ice for your restaurant, bar, food truck, or special event, we can meet your needs.
